Identifying the problem

Vulnerable young adults, especially those with disabilities have long been on the periphery of mainstream society. There are multiple challenges in access to appropriate vocational options as well as employment. The current job mapping and curriculum are not appropriate for the needs of these individuals. There are no certified courses available for young adults with disabilities (Autism and Intellectual Disabilities).

In India, young adults with special needs are currently seen in sheltered workshops. However this is not an employment model as they barely get a small stipend which is not sufficient to meet even their own basic needs. Less than 5% of young adults with disabilities are employed in the open or supported workforce.

108 Young Adults with Disabilities have completed their vocational skill training through 17 partners across the country.

A helping hand is all that you need sometimes to make your dreams come true

Like many other young girls of her age, Khushi too dreamed of a pursuing higher education and making a successful career. But the path was not that easy as she was not like all other girls of her age. Khushi was diagnosed as a slow learner at the young age of 7. Coming from a marginalized background her parents could not afford special school or any teaching aids to support her learn and catch up with other kids.

But as loving parents to their only child, they were also not ready to give up as well. They put all their efforts and energies in finding the best within their reach. That is when they came across Sol’s ARC. With intensive coaching and support, Khushi was able to complete her 10th grade. This gave her the much-needed confidence to take the next step towards her dream. With the newly gained confidence, Khushi was able to overcome her challenges and fear of learning. Khushi was enrolled in our Skill Training program in Retail.

Khushi dreams of making a career in retail sector. She completed her hotel management course from ITM, and has also recently completed her internship from Park View Hotel and Big Bazaar. Not only has Khushi transformed into a very confident girl, she has now started supporting her family through her new job. Her dreams which at one time seemed far- fetched are turning into a reality with each passing day.

The Hundred Smiles project aims to train and place 100 vulnerable young adults with disabilities in the open work force in 2021-22. The program brings together key stakeholder to build and integrate solutions to enable employment for the most vulnerable young adult.
